October 2023 | Global Equity Markets Review
The market declined for the third consecutive month in October, the longest consecutive monthly decline since the 1st three months of 2020. The S&P 500 total return for October was -2.10%, with sharper declines of -5.34% and -5.74% for the S&P 400 Mid Cap and S&P 600 Small Cap, respectively. A two-day rally at month's end pulled the market off its lows; however, it was a month where down days exceeded up days. Ten of eleven sectors declined, with only Utilities posting a positive return. Cyclical sectors were hit especially hard, with Industrials, Materials, and Energy leading the market lower. Investors sought safety in large technology companies with high valuations. Beyond mega-cap growth stocks, value outperformed growth in mid and small cap benchmarks.
As discussed in last month's global equity markets review, the tug-of-war between earnings and interest rates is heating up. Both factors are vital to stocks because future earnings growth and the present value of those earnings determine stock prices. We are currently in a phase in the business cycle where mixed signals are more common than not. The first graph below illustrates that strong economic growth in the 3rd quarter lifted the outlook for earnings estimates supplied by Wall Street analysts, signaling stocks to move higher. However, the second chart highlights that strength in the economy often prompts the Fed to raise interest rates and is associated with lower stock returns. The best environment for the stocks is rising earnings and falling inflation, a challenging outcome that leaves room for error if not deftly navigated.
As expected, international equity markets declined under the pressure of a weak U.S. market. The S&P Global BMI ex-U.S. October return was -4.34%. The S&P Developed BMI ex-U.S. Index and S&P Emerging Markets Index returns in October were -4.62% and -1.86% respectively. The dollar rose by .41% and was the third consecutive monthly increase. Diverging central bank policies in the current environment has supported the dollar's strength and rising geopolitical risks.
