Global bonds snapped June’s “bull market in everything” to post mixed, if muted, results in a fairly uneventful July.

Set back by a 72-basis point slide for ex-US bonds but supported by a +22 basis point move for US aggregate bonds, the Bloomberg Barclays Global Aggregate Index returned -0.28% overall. The US 10-year yield dipped below 2% early in the month, closing out at 2.02% as the Federal Reserve enacted an interest rate cut (25 basis points) for the first time in 11 years. The European Central Bank (ECB), meanwhile, continued to signal high near-term probability of stimulus measures while, as anticipated, nominating notable dove Christine Lagarde to assume leadership in November.

As in equity markets, dollar strengthening exacerbated losses, erased would-be positives or blunted returns across international bond segments and individual countries. Even as economic data continued to slide, developed European sovereign yields fell thanks to dovish tones from policymakers; these moves, however, were largely offset by currency impacts. The British pound came under pressure as political outcomes steered the country closer to the possibility of a no-deal Brexit. Emerging sovereign bonds, however, battled currency impacts to post a gain of 1.12%.

US credit managed positive returns but slowed its roll markedly as investment-grade corporates hit high-single digits for the year-to-date period. Up 0.56% for the month, high yield did just enough to break 10% year to date but lags higher-quality credit for year to date and trailing one year, thanks to participation in intermittent risk sell-offs. As shown in the credit segment chart below, investors have furnished similar reward year to date on yield (investment grade) and a combination of quality and duration.
